Opening

On the night of 31 March 1848 the Fox house in Hydesville, New York, began to answer knocks with knocks. Maggie and Kate Fox, girls in a farm cottage, found that raps would reply to questions. Their mother and neighbours sat. A murdered pedlar was the first story the raps told. Within months Rochester was full of public sittings and the word spiritualism had a birthplace. Leah, the older sister, took the act on the road.

In 1888 Maggie said it had been toe joints. She recanted the recant in part. The raps had already made a religion. Hydesville is a cottage that learned to talk back. The toe-joint sentence is later and still sits in the file.

The spine of the file is two girls and a floor that answered. The Fox Sisters are Hydesville on the last night of March. It is not a pedlar's body under a verified board.

Timeline

31 March 1848. Raps in the Fox cottage. Neighbours in. A system of yes and no. A pedlar named in the telling, buried in the cellar in the telling. Digging later finds some bones or does not, depending on the pen.

1849-50. Rochester public demonstrations. Leah manages. The Methodist and the sceptic both attend. The movement leaves the cottage.

1888. Maggie's confession of toe joints and apples in the wall. Then a softening. She dies in 1893. Kate in 1892. The churches they helped start do not close.

Every seance history starts on that March night. The churches are later life. The cottage floor is first.

Hydesville on 31 March 1848 is a cottage, two girls, and neighbours called in while the raps were still a novelty. A pedlar in the cellar is the first story the knocks told. Digging later finds bones or does not, depending on the pen. Rochester 1849-50 is where a farm floor became a movement.

Maggie's 1888 toe-joint confession sits in the file and so does her softening after. The churches did not close. Leah had already taken the act on the road. The cottage night does not need the churches to have happened.

Key figures

Maggie and Kate are the raps. Children in a farm house.

Leah is the sister who made a stage.

Margaret Fox, the mother, owns the first adult decision to call neighbours in.

The Rochester sitters own the leap from cottage to movement.

Physical and documentary trail

On the paper, 1848 gives you four hard objects and no verified pedlar.

One: the Hydesville raps of 31 March and the neighbour sittings that followed.

Two: the pedlar story and the cellar dig.

Three: Rochester public demonstrations, 1849-50.

Four: Maggie's 1888 statement. Hydesville and Rochester accounts of the Fox raps, 1848-1850, are the originating tray.

There is no 1848 recording. There is no pedlar the county buried with a name everyone accepts. There is no joint that a doctor photographed in 1848.

A public sitting in Rochester is a different object from a cottage knock. Both are in the file. The missing pedlar with a county name is the gap that keeps Hydesville from closing as murder or as theatre.

The knocks answered us from the floor.

Competing explanations

A genuine contact that founded a movement. This is what Rochester took on the road. It has a cottage. It has no pedlar in a tagged grave.

Toe joints and a clever child. Maggie's 1888 door. Has to carry years of public sittings and a sisterhood that outlived the confession.

A mix: a trick that opened a door people already wanted. Possible. The floor still answered in 1848.

Hybrid caution. Two girls made a house talk. A religion left the farm. Morning had no pedlar on a slab.

Later life of the case

Churches, confessions, tourist plaques. I keep those on the later-life shelf. The last night of March stays first.

Finding

Maggie and Kate Fox taught a Hydesville floor to answer knocks on 31 March 1848, neighbours sat and heard it, and Rochester turned that cottage into a movement. Believe the sitting. A farm family does not invent a talking floor for a denomination.

What still will not resolve: a pedlar in the cellar with a name the county kept, or an 1848 look under the girls' feet. Either one would finish the cottage. The proving object is still the thing that knocked back, held by someone who was not selling a seance.
