The New York Times reveals a secret Pentagon UFO program
The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), funded from 2007 to 2012, is made public along with Navy video of the 2004 Nimitz encounter. Most people date the modern disclosure era from this story.

The Navy tells its pilots to report what they see
New guidelines give Navy aircrew a formal way to report unidentified aircraft, after years of encounters off the East Coast went largely unrecorded.

The Pentagon officially releases three Navy videos
FLIR1, Gimbal and GoFast, already leaked, are released by the Department of Defense with the objects still labelled unidentified.

The UAP Task Force is set up
The Department of Defense creates the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force under the Navy. David Grusch later joins it as the National Reconnaissance Office's representative.

James Fox's The Phenomenon is released
Fox's documentary puts senior officials, including former Senate majority leader Harry Reid, on camera about UFOs, and goes back to the Ariel School witnesses in Zimbabwe, now adults, to hear them tell it again.

The first official UAP report to Congress
The intelligence community's preliminary assessment covers 144 reports from US government sources. It can explain one of them, a deflating balloon.

Two senior defense intelligence officials testify to a House intelligence subcommittee and play previously unreleased video.

AARO is created
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office becomes the Pentagon's permanent UAP office, with physicist Sean Kirkpatrick as its first director.

David Grusch goes public
Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal report the former intelligence officer's claim that the US holds craft of non-human origin. He has already briefed Congress in classified session.

Grusch testifies under oath
Grusch, Ryan Graves and David Fravor appear before a House Oversight subcommittee. Grusch says the US runs a multi-decade crash retrieval and reverse engineering program, and that non-human biologics were recovered.

Mexico's Congress is shown two small bodies
Jaime Maussan presents the Nazca mummies at a UAP hearing in Mexico City. The argument over what they are is still going.

The UAP Disclosure Act is cut back
The Schumer-Rounds amendment, which would have let the government take over recovered craft and set up a review board, is stripped down in the final defense bill. A UAP records collection at the National Archives survives.

AARO says it found nothing
Volume one of AARO's historical report finds no evidence that the US government has recovered or reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. It also discloses Kona Blue, a proposed program to study recovered craft that was never funded.

Beatriz Villarroel's VASCO team publishes peer-reviewed papers reporting that brief flashes on pre-Sputnik Palomar sky plates avoid Earth's shadow and cluster around nuclear test dates and UFO reports.

James Fox returns to Varginha
Moment of Contact: New Revelations of Alien Encounters is released digitally, following up Fox's 2022 film Moment of Contact on the 1996 Varginha case in Brazil, where witnesses say creatures were seen and captured.

President Trump orders the UAP files released
The order leads to PURSUE, the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, and the first release of records follows in May.

The retired former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory walks out of his Albuquerque home and is not seen again. His past links to Tom DeLonge put the case at the centre of UFO speculation.
