Opening

Cariari, a banana-growing town in Pococí canton, Limón province, in north-eastern Costa Rica, appears in some UFO case lists as the site of a 1971 sighting in which schoolchildren said they saw small beings and a craft that quickly left. Teachers and local people are said to have heard the story.

That is as far as the public record goes. I searched in English and Spanish for a contemporary newspaper report, named witnesses, an investigator's write-up or a precise date, and found none. The case exists as a line in later compilations, and nowhere else I can reach.

Timeline

2 July 1971Cariari is created as a district of Pococí by executive decree. This is the only firm 1971 date attached to the place, and it has nothing to do with a sighting.

The children are unnamed in every account that circulates, and so are the teachers. No investigator is attached to the case.

Physical and documentary trail

The record: the case-list entries themselves. What is missing is everything else: no contemporary press report, no school or police record, no investigator's notes, and no later interview with anyone who was a child at Cariari in 1971. The one published Costa Rican case history I could check, Óscar Sierra's, does not mention it.

Things you might not know

• Costa Rica's famous 1971 case is somewhere else. On 4 September 1971 a mapping flight for the National Geographic Institute photographed Lake Cote, near Arenal, and one frame showed a disc over the water. Sergio Loaiza, one of the crew, later spoke about it publicly, and Jacques Vallée and Richard Haines both studied the picture. It is about 130 km from Cariari and involves no children.
• A child witness Costa Rica does have on record. The researcher Óscar Sierra lists a case from 2 May 1978 in Bello Horizonte de Escazú, where a ten-year-old named Eduardo Lee said he saw a craft and a translucent being. Sierra calls it the oldest modern case in his files.
• The best-known schoolyard case came later. The Ariel School sighting in Zimbabwe, in September 1994, has dozens of child witnesses, filmed interviews and outside investigators. That is what a well-documented version of this kind of story looks like.

Competing explanations

A real sighting by children. Possible. A rural school in 1971 could easily have had an event that never reached the national press. But there is nothing to check it against.

A story that grew, or a report that drifted. Group reports by children are open to shared imagination, and case lists often copy each other. An entry can lose its source, its date or even its place along the way, and Costa Rica's one famous 1971 case could have pulled others into that year.

Later life of the case

Cariari remains a minor entry in case lists. It is not widely discussed, and no one has come forward to tell it in their own words.

Finding

Too thin to judge. A listed report without a traceable source, date, school or witness. It stays on record as a claim, not a case, and nothing here says the children saw nothing.

What still will not resolve: the original 1971 report, if one exists in Costa Rican newspapers or school records, or in the memory of someone who was there.
