Opening

On the morning of 1 November 1954, All Saints' Day, Rosa Lotti, a farmer's wife from Cennina in Tuscany, was walking barefoot through the woods to church. She was carrying a bunch of carnations and her stockings and shoes, to put on when she arrived.

In a clearing she said she found a spindle-shaped craft about two metres tall and two small beings, about a metre high, who spoke in a language she couldn't understand. They took her carnations and one of her stockings, then went back into the craft, which rose and flew away. It's one of Italy's most famous close encounters.

Key figures

Rosa Lotti, also recorded as Rosa Lotti Dainelli, was the main witness. She was about 40, a farmer's wife and mother of four from a farm called La Collina, between Cennina and Capannole.

Some villagers reported seeing an object in the sky.

Physical and documentary trail

The trail: 1954 newspaper coverage and later investigators' interviews. No physical trace was recorded in the clearing, and the stocking and flowers were never recovered.

Things you might not know

• She was barefoot to save her new shoes. She carried her shoes and stockings to put on at church.
• The flowers were for the Madonna. The carnations were meant for the altar of the Madonna Pellegrina.
• They talked in syllables. She said the beings spoke something like "liu, lai, loi, lau", which she thought sounded Chinese, and the older one laughed.
• The craft had two seats. She described a brown, polished spindle like two ice cream cones joined at the wide ends, standing on three legs, with an open hatch and two seats inside.
• They offered her something back. In her fuller account, the beings held out two small white packages before she ran.

Competing explanations

A close encounter. The witness was consistent, and the details are odd enough to be memorable.

A misinterpreted meeting with people. Some have suggested she met ordinary people, perhaps children or strangers, and the story grew. That doesn't explain the craft.

A story shaped by the 1954 wave. Autumn 1954 brought a huge wave of UFO reports across France and Italy, and saucer stories filled the papers. Her account may have been shaped by that.

Later life of the case

Cennina is a classic of Italian UFO literature and appears in histories of the 1954 European wave.

Finding

A single, consistent witness with a strange and specific story, during Europe's biggest saucer wave. There's no physical evidence. It remains unexplained, and unproven.

What still will not resolve: the stocking and the carnations, which never turned up.
