Opening
Midnight Climax was the San Francisco end of CIA safehouse work under MKUltra. A CIA-paid room on Telegraph Hill, later associated with 225 Chestnut Street, was used so that unwitting men, brought by prostitutes on the Agency payroll, could be given LSD and watched from behind a two-way mirror. George White, a Federal Bureau of Narcotics officer on CIA contract, ran the house. Gottlieb's shop paid. Church and the later dumps are how the caption left the building. The point written down was to see what a person did when the drug arrived without consent.
White's diaries and later interviews treated the work as both operation and sport. New York had a sister arrangement. The program sat inside MKUltra Subproject paper, not as a rumour on a bar napkin. No published medical series came out of Chestnut Street. The file is the house, the mirror, and the unwitting dose.
The spine of the file is a rented room and men who had not agreed to be subjects. Midnight Climax is a safehouse. It is not a clinic paper.
Timeline
Early 1950s Gottlieb's shop looks for a West Coast room. White is already a narcotics officer who likes a stage.
Mid-1950s through the early 1960s the San Francisco house runs. New York sits in parallel for a stretch.
MKUltra is ordered curtailed. Houses close. White's papers survive in the later hunt.
1970s committees put the caption on a table. That daylight is later life. The Chestnut years are first.
White was already a narcotics officer who liked a stage. Gottlieb needed a room where consent would not be asked. Those two needs made Chestnut Street. The mirror is why this is observation, not a clinic note. The men did not sign.

On the paper, the 1950s-60s give you four hard objects and no consented series.
One: MKUltra subproject paper tying funds to safehouse work.

There is no published medical follow-up on the men. There is no page that makes the house a fiction. There is no full roster of every night.
Subproject paper and White's diaries are the stay-behinds. A roster of the men would finish the human count. The shop did not write that roster for a journal.
Where else could a red-blooded American lie, kill, cheat and rape with the sanction of the all-highest?
Competing explanations
An operational study of unwitting dosing. This is the committee reading. It has a house. It has no consent.
A rogue narcotics officer the Agency failed to supervise. Incomplete. The shop paid the rent.
Exaggeration from White's taste for a line. Weak against subproject paper.
Hybrid caution. A room was rented. Men were not told. A committee later named the caption.
Later life of the case
MKUltra books and the Chestnut address as a tourist footnote. I keep those on the later-life shelf. The house years stay first.
Finding
CIA money paid for a San Francisco safehouse where George White watched unwitting men after they were given LSD, and Church put that caption on the record. Believe the house. A rented room with a mirror does not invent itself for a later documentary.
What still will not resolve: a full roster of the men, or a medical follow-up the shop never wrote. Either one would finish the human scale. The proving object is still those names, held in a file that has not been put on one table.
