Opening

On the night of 15-16 October 1957 Antonio Villas Boas, a young farmer near Sao Francisco de Sales in Minas Gerais, was working a field with a tractor when a light came down. He said an egg-shaped craft landed, figures in grey suits took him aboard, and he was examined and then put with a woman who did not speak his language. He was returned to the field. The tractor battery was dead. He told the story first in a letter, then to journalist Joao Martins and to Dr Olavo Fontes in Rio.

Fontes examined him, took the statement, and wrote that the man did not read like a hoaxer looking for a stage. The sexual chapter made the case famous and also made it easy to sneer. The 1957 paper is a farmer, a dead battery, and a medical interview. The later films are not that paper.

The spine of the file is a night statement given to a doctor who was willing to listen. Villas Boas is a field and a body that had been handled. It is not a kept suit from the craft.

Timeline

Mid-October 1957. Lights over the family ground on earlier nights, which the household had already talked about. 15 October into the 16th. Antonio out late with the tractor. A red object descends. Figures. He fights and is taken. The interior account: examination, a woman, a sample, a tour that is thinner than later retellings. Back in the field before dawn. Battery flat.

He writes. Martins of O Cruzeiro takes interest. Fontes, a Rio physician already collecting Brazilian cases, sees him in early 1958, examines marks he said were left, and records a long statement. Fontes's write-up is why the case left Minas as more than tavern talk.

The story is printed and argued. Villas Boas later trains in law and lives a quieter public life than the file. He does not recant. He also does not produce a fragment from the field.

Every later abduction template owes this night a debt it rarely pays in full. That debt is later life. The Fontes interview is first.

Key figures

Antonio Villas Boas is the farmer. Young, working at night, not a journalist. His letter and the Fontes statement are the exhibit. The sexual detail is his, not a magazine invention, which is why it sits in the file whether a reader likes it or not.

Joao Martins brings the case to print. He is a conduit. He is not the field.

Olavo Fontes is the doctor who chose to treat the statement as a medical interview. His opinion that the man was not performing for a crowd is part of why 1957 still has weight.

The household that had already seen lights is the thin supporting layer. They do not claim the cabin.

Two: the dead battery and the marks Fontes said he saw when he examined the man.

Three: the letter and the Martins contact that moved the story off the farm.

There is no photograph of the craft in the furrow. There is no independent witness to the taking. There is no object from the cabin with a 16 October tag.

Competing explanations

A physical abduction. This is his statement. It has a doctor willing to write it down and a battery that had been fine. It has no second pair of eyes in the field.

Dream, fever, or a story built from earlier lights. Possible for a long night on a tractor. Fontes did not read it that way. A reader can still prefer that door.

Hoax for attention. The later fame is real. The first letter and the medical exam sit earlier than the fame, which is the hard part for a simple stunt.

Hybrid caution. A farmer said he was taken out of a field. A doctor wrote it down. The field kept no machine.

Finding

Antonio Villas Boas said a craft came down on his field on 15-16 October 1957, that he was taken aboard and examined, and that he came back to a tractor whose battery was dead. He told a doctor, not a stage. Believe the farmer for that night. A man who still has to plough does not need this story.

What still will not resolve: a photograph from that furrow, or a mark Fontes logged that a lab still holds with a chain. Either one would pin the cabin to the dirt. The proving object is still the craft in the field, held by someone who was not on the tractor.
