Opening

Mark McCandlish was an aerospace illustrator whose work had appeared for major defence contractors. In the 1990s he began telling a story he said he'd heard from a friend and fellow aerospace artist, Brad Sorensen. On 12 November 1988, at Norton Air Force Base in California, Sorensen had wandered into a restricted hangar during a base event. Behind a curtain, he said, were three flying discs of different sizes, the smallest about 24 feet across, the largest well over 100 feet. They were called "alien reproduction vehicles": craft built by humans, using principles copied from recovered alien technology. McCandlish drew what Sorensen described, and his cutaway drawing of the "Flux Liner" became one of the most famous images in UFO research.

Timeline

12 November 1988. Sorensen attends an event at Norton Air Force Base and, according to McCandlish, sees the three craft displayed in a hangar, with a video playing that showed one of them hovering and moving. Sorensen reportedly overhears someone refer to them as alien reproduction vehicles, and is later told he shouldn't have been there.

Soon after. Sorensen describes the craft to McCandlish, who makes detailed drawings, including the cutaway showing concentric capacitor plates, crew seating, and a central column.

1990s. McCandlish tells the story in lectures and on radio.

May 2001. McCandlish is one of the witnesses presented by Dr Steven Greer's Disclosure Project at the National Press Club in Washington.

2021. McCandlish dies.

March 2024. The Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) reports that it found no evidence that the US government or private industry has reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology.

Mark McCandlish was the illustrator who made the story public and drew the craft. He never claimed to have seen them himself.

Brad Sorensen was the claimed eyewitness. He has said almost nothing publicly, and the account comes to us almost entirely through McCandlish.

Physical and documentary trail

On the paper: McCandlish's interviews and testimony, his drawings, and the Disclosure Project materials. There's no record of a display of discs at Norton in 1988, no statement from Sorensen confirming the details, and no photograph.

The drawings are detailed and technically fluent, which is what McCandlish did for a living. They show what he understood from his friend's description, not what anyone photographed.

Competing explanations

Real secret craft. The US built working flying discs using technology from recovered craft, and Sorensen saw them by accident. This fits later claims of reverse-engineering programmes made in Congress.

A misunderstood display or a secret aircraft programme. Sorensen may have seen mock-ups, research models, or unrelated classified aircraft, and the story grew as it passed through McCandlish.

A story that can't be tested. With the eyewitness silent and no records, the account rests on one man retelling another's memory.

Later life of the case

McCandlish's Flux Liner drawing is widely reproduced and has inspired engineering hobbyists, documentaries, and speculation about secret propulsion. It's central to the idea that the US has its own flying saucers.

Finding

A detailed second-hand account from a credible illustrator, about craft his friend said he saw in a hangar in 1988. The friend has never publicly confirmed it, and no record of the display exists. The Pentagon says it has found no reverse-engineering programme. The story stays open, but it rests on a witness who has never spoken for himself.
