Opening

On the night of 21 December 1978 a Safe Air Argosy freight aircraft, flying between Wellington and Christchurch, picked up lights off the Kaikoura coast that the crew filmed and that Wellington radar also painted. A television camera was on board because the lights had already been a story. Quentin Fogarty sat with the film. Captain Bill Startup flew. Radar and cockpit talk went onto tape. New Zealand's official look later offered squid boats and Venus. The tape did not vanish.

Kaikoura is film plus radar plus a freight crew who were not out for a documentary until the documentary climbed on. That mix is why the night outlived a one-paragraph close.

Finding

A Safe Air Argosy filmed lights off Kaikoura on 21 December 1978 that Wellington radar also painted. Believe the freight run. A cargo captain does not invent a plot for a television week.

What still will not resolve: a second aircraft film from that hour, or a boat-and-planet close the crew would sign. Either one would pin the lights. The proving object is still those lights, held as boats or as other by more than one tape.
