CUSSAC

Opening

On 29 August 1967, two children minding cattle outside the village of Cussac, in the Cantal, reported four small black figures near a round craft in a field. The figures, about 1.2 metres tall, rose into the air and entered the craft, which climbed and left. The children were a brother and sister, aged 13 and 9. The gendarmerie recorded a smell of sulphur and dried grass where the object had been. France's official UFO office later reinvestigated the case and could not explain it.

1978GEPAN, the UFO study unit set up the year before inside France's space agency CNES, reinvestigates. Investigators interview the witnesses again, now adults, and find their accounts still agree. The case is placed in category D: an unexplained phenomenon with good-quality testimony.

March 2007CNES publishes its archive online through GEIPAN, GEPAN's successor. Cussac is among the files, and the release draws so much traffic that the site crashes on its first day.

Key figures

François and Anne-Marie Delpeuch are the only witnesses. Their accounts agreed in 1967 and again when investigators re-interviewed them as adults.

The local gendarmerie made the only same-day record of the site.

GEPAN is the reason this case carries weight: a state agency reopened a children's story a decade later and declined to close it.

The physical evidence is a smell and a patch of dry grass, noted on the day but never sampled or measured in any report that has been released. There are no photographs from 1967.

Things you might not know

• The figures were about 120 centimetres tall. That is roughly four feet.
• The sphere was about 15 feet across. The children described it hovering just above the field.
• One figure went in head first. Accounts describe a being slipping into the sphere head first before it left.
• It left with a whistle. The sphere rose in a spiral, grew brighter and disappeared with a high-pitched whistling sound.
• The first press report differs. A 1967 newspaper account does not match the version investigators gathered later in every detail.
• France's space agency calls it astonishing. On releasing its files in 2007, CNES described Cussac as one of the most astonishing cases observed in France.

Competing explanations

An encounter with an unknown craft and occupants. This is the witnesses' account, and GEPAN's classification lets it stand.

Misidentified people and equipment. Some writers suggest the children saw ordinary people, perhaps in dark work clothes, with a balloon or other equipment, and read the rest into it. Nobody has identified who they could have been, and the description of figures rising into the air doesn't fit easily.

A story the children made up. They were young, but the account stayed the same across eleven years, and the gendarmes found a smell and a mark on the ground the same day. Neither of those proves anything by itself.

Later life of the case

Cussac is one of the cases GEIPAN's own staff have cited when explaining why a small percentage of French reports stay unexplained. The 2007 archive release gave it a second, international audience.

Finding

Two children gave a consistent, specific account, a government investigation took it seriously twice, and no one has produced a better explanation. The physical side is thin: a smell and some grass, recorded but never analysed.

What still will not resolve: any measurement from the field in August 1967, and any independent witness to the sphere.
