Opening

In August 1978 four men on a canoe trip in the Allagash Wilderness of northern Maine watched a light over Eagle Lake. Jim Weiner, Jack Weiner, Chuck Rak and Charlie Foltz had been friends. They said the light came down, a beam took them off the water, and they came back to a fire that had burned down as if hours had gone. Hypnosis years later produced a shared cabin story. The first night on the lake did not need hypnosis. The light and the missing firewood did.

They told family. They told investigators later. Sceptics put the cabin on the later sessions and leave the lake light as a flare or a plane. The four men did not split the way a simple camp story usually splits.

Timeline

August 1978. The four are on a wilderness canoe route they had planned. Eagle Lake, night, a bright object that does not fly like the traffic they know. They wave. It comes. A beam in the telling that first night already. Then they are at the fire and the fire is wrong for the time they think they have been gone.

They finish the trip. They talk among themselves. Formal investigation and hypnotic regression sit years later, in the 1980s, when the case becomes a four-man abduction card. Those sessions add tables and figures. Keep them on a later shelf. The lake and the fire are 1978.

They have been interviewed together and apart. The light holds. The cabin thickens with the years in the ordinary way of remembered hours, which is not the same as a collapse.

Allagash enters the New England abduction list. That list is later life.

Eagle Lake is far enough into the Allagash that a light has no cheap explanation from a road. The four men were already a unit before the trip. That is why a shared evening is harder to talk apart than four strangers in a bar. The fire burned down as if hours had gone. That detail sat in the first tellings, before hypnosis added a cabin.

Finding
