Opening

At about 21:27 on 22 June 1976, the crew of the Spanish Navy corvette Atrevida, off the coast of Fuerteventura, watched a yellowish-blue light rise, stop, and then spread into a huge glowing halo that hung in the sky for around forty minutes. Minutes later, on Gran Canaria, a doctor and a taxi driver said they saw a transparent sphere close to the ground near Las Rosas, with two tall figures inside. Thousands of people across the islands saw the halo. The Spanish Air Force investigated and, in a file declassified in 1994, left the event unidentified.

This is one of the best-documented official cases in Europe, and it also has one of the better mundane explanations. Both facts belong in the report.

Timeline

22 June 1976, 21:27Atrevida, about three nautical miles off Punta Lantailla, Fuerteventura. The captain's report describes an intense light that rose, stopped, turned, and developed a luminous halo. The whole crew saw it. The ship's surface radar showed nothing.

About 21:30Near Las Rosas, in the Gáldar area of Gran Canaria, Dr Francisco Padrón León is driven to a patient by taxi. Both men describe a transparent sphere, tens of metres across, close to the ground, with a platform inside and two figures dressed in red, well over two metres tall. The sphere expands and rises. A woman at a nearby house also reports a large blue ball.

1976The Spanish Air Force opens a file. An investigating officer takes depositions and questionnaires from fourteen witnesses, grades them for reliability, and rules out aircraft, meteors, and aurora.

19 November 1976General Carlos Dols de Espejo and the crew of an Air Force transport report a similar large halo while flying near the islands.

1994The Air Force file is declassified as part of Spain's release of its UFO archive. It runs to more than a hundred pages and concludes the phenomenon was unidentified.

Key figures

The Atrevida's captain and first officer gave the most precise description of the halo, with times, positions, and a radar check.

Dr Francisco Padrón León gave the dramatic part: the sphere, the platform, the figures. The taxi driver supported most of it.

General Carlos Dols de Espejo gave the November sighting, which established that the same effect came back.

Physical and documentary trail

What exists: the declassified Spanish Air Force file, with the Atrevida's report, the Gran Canaria depositions, and the investigator's conclusion. Photographs of the halo were taken from several islands that night.

There is no physical trace from Las Rosas.

Things you might not know

• Hundreds of people saw it. Witnesses were spread across Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and ships at sea.
• The secret file was not very secret. The Air Force report was declassified in 1994, but a journalist, J. J. Benítez, had already used it for a book in 1977.
• The likeliest answer is a missile. The Spanish researcher Ricardo Campo argued in 2013 that the halo was a Poseidon missile test fired from a US submarine in the Atlantic.
• It was part of a pattern. Campo linked five Canary Islands sightings between 1974 and 1979 to ballistic missile launches.
• Spain's military did not know at the time. The Air Force investigators were not told of the launches when they ruled out known causes.
• The famous photo may be from another night. A note in the official file says the widely shared picture does not belong to this case.

Competing explanations

An unknown craft. The Air Force didn't find an explanation, and the Gran Canaria witnesses described something structured, with occupants, at close range.

A submarine-launched missile test. Researchers including Ricardo Campo Pérez have matched the Canary Islands halos of the 1970s, 22 June 1976 among them, with US Navy Poseidon test launches in the Atlantic. A missile's exhaust plume lit by the sun above the Earth's shadow produces an expanding glowing shell just like the one in the photographs, and none of the witnesses would have been told about a test. This explains the halo well. It doesn't explain the figures.

Perception under shock. If the halo was a missile plume, the Las Rosas sphere could be the same plume seen from underneath, with the platform and figures added by frightened witnesses making sense of a light they had no frame for. That can't be proved from the Air Force file, and the testimony doesn't read as careless.

Later life of the case

The 1994 release made the Canaries one of the standard examples in debates about government UFO files. It's cited both as proof that a military investigation came up empty and as a textbook case of a missile test mistaken for a UFO. The Canaries have seen similar halos since, and some of those have been matched to announced launches.

Finding

The halo seen across the islands on 22 June 1976 was very likely a missile plume, and the Air Force file's "unidentified" says more about what the investigators were allowed to know than about the sky. The Las Rosas account is harder. Three witnesses described the same close object, and no one has explained their description beyond saying it was the same light seen badly.

What still will not resolve: a US Navy launch record for 22 June 1976 matched to the time, and anything that explains what the doctor and the taxi driver saw at Las Rosas other than the halo.
