FORT ITAIPU

Opening

At about 2 a.m. on 4 November 1957, according to the story, two sentries on watch at Fort Itaipu, a coastal artillery fort at Praia Grande near Santos in São Paulo state, saw a new bright star appear over the Atlantic and come straight toward them. It slowed, dropped silently to a few hundred feet above the fort and hung there, glowing orange.

Then a wave of heat hit them. One collapsed, the other screamed, the fort's electricity failed, and by the time the garrison reached the walls the light was climbing away. The two men were said to have serious burns. It's one of the most dramatic military UFO stories of the 1950s, and almost all of it comes from one source.

Timeline

4 November 1957, about 2 a.mThe sentries see the light approach from the sea and stop over the fort. A wave of heat, a humming sound, one man down. The fort's power, including its emergency circuits, fails. Soldiers running to the walls see an orange light leave.

Following daysAccording to the account, the burned men are treated in hospital under secrecy, the Army investigates, and officers from the US military mission in Brazil take part.

Two or three weeks laterOlavo Fontes, a Rio de Janeiro doctor and the Brazilian representative of the American group APRO, hears about it from a Brazilian Army officer, and later from others. He cannot get access to the sentries.

1959Fontes publishes the account in the APRO Bulletin. Every later version, in books by Donald Keyhoe and others, goes back to it.

Later decadesBrazilian researcher Edison Boaventura interviews soldiers who served at the fort at the time. None can confirm seeing burned sentries.

Key figures

The two sentries have never been named.

Olavo Fontes, a gastroenterologist and APRO's man in Brazil, is the case's only source. He also brought the Ubatuba fragments and the Villas Boas abduction to the world. His informants were Army officers he refused to name.

Kevin Randle, an American researcher, has gone through the case in detail and concluded it lacks corroboration.

Physical and documentary trail

What exists: Fontes's 1959 APRO Bulletin article and the retellings based on it. A 1958 Brazilian magazine mention refers only to a sighting, not to injuries.

Still missing: the sentries' names, any medical record of their burns, any Brazilian Army document, any confirmation of American involvement, and a firm date, since some versions say 3 November.

Things you might not know

• The burns were mostly under their clothes. Fontes reported second- and third-degree burns covering large areas, worst where their uniforms covered them, which is the detail believers cite most.
• The whole fort went dark. Even the emergency circuits were said to have failed while the object was overhead, and come back after it left.
• The fort is still there. Built in the early 1900s, Fort Itaipu is still a Brazilian Army site and opens to visitors on some days.
• Fontes tried and failed. Despite his contacts as a doctor, he never managed to see the sentries or their records.

Competing explanations

A real event, kept quiet. The Army had reasons to keep an incident at a military fort secret, and Fontes said his informants were officers who feared for their careers. On this reading, missing documents are what you would expect.

An event that grew. Something may have happened, a light or a power failure, and the burns, the American officers and the drama were added as the story passed from person to person.

A story with no event behind it. Randle points to the anonymous sources, the lack of any record, the shifting date and Fontes's habit of embellishing other cases, and suggests there may be nothing underneath.

Later life of the case

Fort Itaipu still turns up on lists of the most dangerous UFO encounters, usually told as fact. Researchers who have looked closely, in Brazil and the US, have found less each time.

Finding

The story of the burned sentries rests on one man's account of what unnamed officers told him, and nothing found since has confirmed it. That doesn't prove it was invented: an army that hushed it up would leave exactly this kind of gap. But as it stands, it is a good story without a witness who can be named.

What still will not resolve: whether there is a Brazilian Army file on the night of 4 November 1957, and whether the two sentries were real.
