Opening

Barra, in the Outer Hebrides, has the only airport in the world where scheduled flights land on a tidal beach. Aircraft from Glasgow set down on the sand of Traigh Mhòr, and the timetable moves with the tide. This report was compiled as a 1996 sighting: a light on the approach to that beach runway that did not behave like a beacon, while the aircraft landed normally.

Physical and documentary trail

On the record: Barra Airport and its beach runway are real, long-established and well documented. The 1996 light is not. No named witness, crew report, press story or official file for it turned up in the searches made for this report, and the original entry names no source.

Nothing was diverted, recovered or photographed. By the entry's own account, the flight landed as scheduled.

Competing explanations

An ordinary light. A beach runway sits beside moving water, wet sand and island traffic, all of which reflect and move lights in ways a normal runway does not.

An unrecorded unknown. Possible, but with no witness or document, there is nothing to test.

Later life of the case

The entry has not gained a source since it first appeared. Barra's airport, meanwhile, remains famous for the reason it always was: scheduled flights landing on a beach timed to the tide. For a Scottish case with a named witness and a police investigation, see Dechmont Law.

Finding

Barra's beach airport is real and unusual. The 1996 light could not be traced to any source, and the aircraft that supposedly saw it landed normally. This report stays open only as an untraced entry.

What still will not resolve: who reported the light, and when. A named witness or a crew report would give this report something to stand on. None has been found.
