ANCIENT RAM INN

Opening

The Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, is sold as "the most haunted building in England." It's a real old building, a Grade II* listed former inn, and its reputation comes almost entirely from one family. John Humphries bought it in 1968 and spent the rest of his life telling visitors about what he said lived there: a witch, a monk, an incubus and a succubus, murdered children, and a pagan burial site under the floor. His daughter Caroline has since run it as a paranormal venue, with overnight ghost hunts and repeated television visits.

Timeline

Late medieval to 16th centuryThe building goes up and is remodelled. Its official listing dates it to the late medieval period with a major remodelling in the mid-to-late 1500s. The inn's own story puts it at 1145, with links to St Mary's Church nearby.

1968John Humphries buys the building and turns it into a guesthouse. He later says he found children's bones and broken daggers while digging under the stairs.

1990s to 2000sThe ghost stories spread through local press and paranormal groups. Rooms get names and resident spirits.

2000s and 2010sBritish and American ghost-hunting TV programmes film there. Paid overnight vigils become the building's main business.

After John Humphries's death, Caroline Humphries keeps the venue running, and has said it "kind of evolved into an event location for paranormal activity."

Key figures

John Humphries is the source of nearly every claim. As far as the public record shows, the bones he said he found were never examined by an archaeologist or coroner, and no dating or report has been published.

Caroline Humphries runs the building today and presents its reputation to visitors and TV crews.

The TV producers made the inn famous outside Gloucestershire. Their episodes add fresh "activity" but no new history.

Physical and documentary trail

What survives: the Historic England listing, which describes the building and dates it. Everything else, including the burial, the bones, the ritual killings, and the named ghosts, comes from the Humphries family and the programmes that interviewed them.

I found no excavation report, coroner's record, or archaeological survey for the claimed finds.

It kind of evolved into an event location for paranormal activity.

A good story in an old house. An old, dark, uneven building, visitors who arrive expecting fear, and hosts who tell them where to expect it produce exactly the experiences reported. Every overnight group arrives already knowing the stories.

Later life of the case

The inn is part of the British ghost-tourism circuit and appears in lists and TV specials. Its reputation now sustains itself: each new programme cites the earlier ones.

Finding

A real listed building with a well-marketed reputation. The ghost stories trace back to one owner's claims, and the physical claim that could be tested, the children's bones, was never tested in public. There's nothing here beyond what visitors bring with them.
