BEAST OF BODMIN

Opening

Through the 1980s and 1990s people on Bodmin Moor reported a large black cat that was not a farm moggie: livestock killed, a shape on a hedge, a tail that did not belong to a fox. The press named it the Beast of Bodmin. In 1995 the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food sent a team, looked at carcasses and videos and prints, and wrote that there was no verifiable evidence of a big cat on the moor. The sightings did not stop because a ministry said so.

Cornwall is full of ponies and sheep and dark gorse. A black cat the size of a leopard is either there or it is a long shadow. MAFF chose the shadow. Farmers who had lost animals chose the cat.

Timeline

Early 1980sScattered large-cat talk on the moor. 1990s the reports thicken: a ewe opened, a shape on a lane, a video that will not sit still under a freeze-frame.

1995MAFF investigation. They examine remains, look at photographs, listen to farmers. The published line is no verifiable big cat. They allow that a small number of exotic cats could live loose in Britain. They do not pin one to Bodmin.

Sightings continue after the paper. Skulls and corpses are offered and usually become other animals under a second look.

There is no specimen the ministry accepted. There is no collar from an escaped leopard with a Bodmin tag. There is no frame that holds still as a panther.

No verifiable evidence for the presence of a big cat.

Things you might not know

• A 1976 law is often blamed. The Dangerous Wild Animals Act made keeping big cats costly, and one theory says some owners let theirs go rather than license them.
• Britain has caught real loose cats. A puma was captured in Inverness-shire in 1980 and named Felicity at the Highland Wildlife Park.
• A lynx turned up in London. A young Eurasian lynx was caught in Cricklewood in 2001 and sent to a zoo in France.
• The government keeps a list. In 2006 DEFRA published the exotic cats known to have escaped in the UK. Most had been recaptured.
• Lynx were caught as recently as 2025. Two were captured near Kingussie in the Scottish Highlands in January that year.

Competing explanations

A living leopard or puma on the moor. This is the farmers' night. It has kills. It has no pelt the ministry would sign.

Dogs, feral cats, misread ponies, a press name. The MAFF door.

An escaped exotic that died and was never found. Possible. Not produced.

Later life of the case

Less than a week after the 1995 report, a boy found a large cat skull by the River Fowey. The Natural History Museum identified it as a young male leopard that had not died in Britain: the back of the skull had been cut away in the way used to mount a head on a leopard-skin rug. Finding

Farmers on Bodmin Moor spent years reporting a large black cat and lost animals, and in 1995 MAFF wrote that they could not verify a big cat on that ground. A ministry close is not the same as an empty moor.

What still will not resolve: a specimen with a Bodmin chain, or a frame that holds as a leopard under a still button.
