Opening
Unit 731 sat at Pingfang, outside Harbin, under Ishii Shiro. The work was dressed as water purification and was not. Prisoners were called logs. The plant was demolished as the Soviets came. Ishii lived. In 1947 Camp Detrick sent men, among them Norbert Fell, Edwin Hill, Joseph Victor. They sat with Ishii and more than twenty others. A May 1947 MacArthur channel discussed keeping the product in intelligence files, not in a war-crimes docket. SWNCC language that August: this was the only known controlled human data of its kind, and a trial would put it in the street.
No single signed immunity ribbon has been produced. The practical bargain is the file: data to Detrick, no dock at Tokyo for the principals. The Soviets tried their own men at Khabarovsk. Ishii died in Japan in 1959. Fort Detrick kept the notes.
The spine of the file is a trade of paper for silence. Unit 731 is Pingfang and a 1947 desk. It is not a missing camp. The camp was there.

Later books argue the exact shape of immunity. The practical result is first: no Tokyo dock for the principals, data west.
Pingfang was demolished as the Soviets arrived. That demolition is why the site is a scar and a paper trail, not a standing works. Detrick sitting with Ishii and more than twenty others in 1947 is the harvest. SWNCC saying the data was unique and a trial would put it in the street is the bargain spoken aloud.
Khabarovsk is the other ending for other men. It proves a dock was possible. Tokyo without the principals is the American choice. No single ribbon labelled immunity has to exist for that choice to have been made.

There is no public ribbon labelled immunity that every archive agrees is the one page. There is no full public set of the notes Detrick kept. There is no undoing of Khabarovsk.
Interview notes and SWNCC language are the stay-behinds. A signed immunity page would finish the shape. The full Detrick set in public would finish the take. Neither undoes Pingfang or the missing Tokyo dock.
This was the only known controlled human data of its kind.
Competing explanations
A formal grant of immunity. This is the popular reading. It has a practical result. It has no single ribbon everyone can hold.
A quiet decision not to docket, in exchange for notes. This fits 1947 paper. It is still a bargain.
Exaggeration of Detrick's take. Weak against the sittings and SWNCC's own sentence.
Hybrid caution. The camp was real. The principals did not sit at Tokyo. The notes went west.

Finding
Unit 731 worked at Pingfang, Ishii lived to talk to Detrick in 1947, and SWNCC wrote that the product should not go into an open dock. Believe the site. Believe the bargain as a result even if the ribbon is missing. A demolished plant does not invent prisoners.
What still will not resolve: the signed immunity page, or the full Detrick notes in public. Either one would finish the shape of the silence. The proving object is still that page, or those notes, held in an archive that has not put them on one table.
