OPERATION PBSUCCESS

Opening

In June 1954 Jacobo Arbenz left the presidency of Guatemala after a CIA project captioned PBSUCCESS used exile forces, radio, and a psychological campaign to make an army and a president believe the invasion was larger than it was. United Fruit's land fight sat in the cables as weather and as motive. The Agency's own later history, as at Ajax, is why this card is not only memoir. Castillo Armas came in. Arbenz went into exile. The 1954 year is the file.

Declassified volumes name the radio, the rumours, the contacts in the officer corps. They also name the limits: a small force, a large bluff. Fruit Company paper is part of the weather in Washington. It is not the only desk. The coup is still a coup.

The spine of the file is a captioned project that unseated a president. PBSUCCESS is June 1954. It is not a rumour that Guatemala changed government by weather.

Arbenz's land reform is why Fruit sat in the cables. PBSUCCESS is why the radio sat in the mountains. A small exile force needed a large rumour. That is the method the later history is willing to print. June is still a resignation, not a harvest report.

Physical and documentary trail

On the paper, 1953-54 give you four hard objects and no weather excuse.

One: PBSUCCESS planning paper.

Two: the radio and psychological operation in June.

Three: Arbenz's resignation.

Four: later CIA histories as declassified. CIA internal history of PBSUCCESS, is the originating Agency tray.

There is no page that makes the project a newspaper invention. There is no full unredacted cash ledger in public. There is no claim Arbenz left only because the harvest failed.

A captioned project and a resignation are the stay-behinds. Ledgers would finish the scale. The radio already finishes the aim as written.

The object was the overthrow of Arbenz.

Competing explanations

A CIA coup for United Fruit. This is the popular reading. It has cables. It has land.

A Cold War project that used Fruit as weather. Also in the paper. Fruit still sat in the room.

A Guatemalan army revolt the Agency only cheered. Weak against the caption and the radio.

Hybrid caution. A project was aimed at a president. He left in June. The radio was not a harvest report.

Finding

CIA paper names PBSUCCESS as a project to unseat Arbenz, and in June 1954 he left after a radio-and-exile campaign the Agency later wrote up as its own. Believe the caption. A station does not invent a project name for a later fruit company pamphlet.

What still will not resolve: an unredacted ledger, or a page that shows June running without the radio. Either one would finish the scale. The proving object is still those ledgers, held in a file that has not come out whole.
